We are saddened to hear of the death of Right Reverend Simon Barrington-Ward, former General Secretary of CMS, Chaplain to the Queen, Bishop of Coventry and later, Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Ely, Honorary Fellow and Honorary Assistant Chaplain at Magdalene College, Cambridge... and also one of Penhurst Retreat Centre`s first Patrons.

Founding trustee of Penhurst, Marion Myers, writes: "Bishop Simon Barrington-Ward, as one of our first Patrons, has been a wonderful friend and wise counsellor to Penhurst Retreat Centre since its early days.  At a Thanksgiving Day for Penhurst in June 2003 he preached on "homecoming" and he and his wife Jean appreciated only too well the sense of welcome and acceptance that visitors to the retreat centre experienced, often after a period of personal disruption or sadness.  Speaking of Penhurst Retreat Centre he said "once across the threshold, the easy welcoming-ness, the familiar joys of sight and sound and smell, and the sheer joy of arrival seemed to enfold you and draw you in."  We thank God for Bishop Simon`s life and witness and for helping all of us to enter afresh into the presence of Christ where Bishop Simon now lives in the joyful presence of  His Lord; his final homecoming."

We send our deepest condolences to his wife Jean and their family.
