A day based on the film `It`s a Wonderful Life`. The film centres on George Bailey, who gave up his personal dreams in order to help others by running his father`s small community bank, and so protect the community of Bedford Falls from a greedy businessman.

But a costly mistake pushes George to the brink of despair, and his feelings of failure bring about a suicide attempt on Christmas Eve. This leads to the intervention of his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody. Clarence shows George that far from being a failure, he has touched the lives of many others, and how different life would be for his wife and the entire community had he had not been born.

As Christians we can also look our situation critically and wonder if we are doing enough or if we can do any more. Yet so often we forget what we have done, overlooking the fact that the world is a better place today due to our efforts. We will watch the film in sections, and discuss the film, relating it to our world today, and to our work in it.

This retreat is part of a series of Advent quiet days. Come and spend some time in the peaceful surroundings of Penhurst, contemplating all that the season of Advent means. Each day will have a theme, time together and time in solitude, space to be silent and still. Come for one or more individual days or stay overnight for more.
